Advantage vs Supplement

Two ways through Medicare. One right fit for you.

Almost everyone on Medicare ends up choosing one of two paths. Here is how they actually compare, side by side.

Medicare Advantage · Part C

All-in-one, lower premium

A private plan that replaces Original Medicare and bundles hospital, medical, and usually drug coverage together, often with added benefits.

  • Low or even $0 monthly plan premium
  • Often includes dental, vision, and hearing
  • Prescription drug coverage usually built in
  • Uses a network of doctors, with copays as you go

Best for people who want a low premium, built-in extras, and are comfortable using a plan network.

Medicare Supplement · Medigap

Freedom and predictable costs

Works alongside Original Medicare and pays the deductibles and coinsurance Medicare leaves behind, so your costs stay predictable.

  • See any provider nationwide that takes Medicare
  • No networks and no referrals
  • Very predictable out-of-pocket costs
  • Higher monthly premium, add a Part D drug plan

Best for people who travel, want their choice of doctors, or want the fewest surprises at the point of care.

Medicare Basics

The four parts of Medicare, in plain English.

Medicare is built from four parts. Knowing what each one does makes the Advantage versus Supplement choice a lot clearer.

A /

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay no premium for Part A.

B /

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. Part B has a standard monthly premium.

C /

Medicare Advantage

A private all-in-one alternative that bundles Parts A and B, usually adds drug coverage, and often includes extra benefits.

D /

Prescription Drugs

Covers prescription medications. It can be a standalone plan you pair with a Supplement, or built into a Medicare Advantage plan.

Timing Matters

When you can enroll or make a change.

Medicare runs on specific windows. Miss one and you may wait a year or face a penalty, so it helps to know yours.

Initial Enrollment

The seven month window around your 65th birthday: the three months before, your birthday month, and the three months after. This is when most people first sign up.

Annual Enrollment

October 15 to December 7 every year. Anyone can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, with coverage starting January 1.

Advantage Open Enrollment

January 1 to March 31. If you are already on a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch plans or move back to Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment

Triggered by life events such as moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for extra help. These open a window outside the usual dates.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles your coverage into one private plan, often with a low premium, a doctor network, and extras like dental and vision. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works with Original Medicare and pays the costs Medicare leaves behind, letting you see any provider nationwide for a higher premium plus a separate drug plan. Advantage trades a network and copays for low cost and extras. Supplement trades a higher premium for freedom and predictability.
No. Our help is free to you. We are paid by the carriers when you enroll, and your premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or through us. The difference is you get a licensed person who compares plans, checks your doctors and prescriptions, and stays with you year after year.
Your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday. The Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 to December 7, when anyone can join, switch, or drop an Advantage or Part D plan. The Advantage Open Enrollment Period is January 1 to March 31 for people already on an Advantage plan. Special Enrollment Periods open after events like moving or losing coverage.
It depends on your coverage. Most Medicare Advantage plans already include Part D drug coverage. If you choose Original Medicare with a Supplement, you will usually add a standalone Part D plan. We review your medication list and confirm your drugs are covered before you enroll.
With a Medicare Supplement you can see any provider in the country that accepts Original Medicare, with no network. With a Medicare Advantage plan you generally use the plan network. Before you enroll, we check whether your current doctors are in network so there are no surprises.
